Probe I - 1979

The Probe I, introduced in September of 1979 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, was the first of the Probe concept vehicles. Originally introduced as a two-door hatchback, it featured popup headlamps, flat wheel covers, and covered rear wheels. It was built on a Mustang chassis and was powered by the Mustang's 2.3L 4-cylinder engine. With a drag coefficient of only .250, it got a solid 40mpg fuel efficiency rating. The Probe I's sleek shape was to be the design for cars to come by Ford for the late '80's. Less then a year later, during the spring/summer of 1980, Ford unveiled the four-door version of the Probe I.
