Default how to: upgrade to a big brake kit the cheap way

i came across this on probe talk and figured i should share this with you guys its shows you how to make a complete cheap bolt on brake upgrade using oem mazda parts
all credit for this post goes to PGT97_Racer on probe talk
in the post i read that calipers mentioned also apparently fit first gens

all mazda 6 calipers and rotors bolt right on our car EVEN THE MAZDASPEED 6 !
remember: you must buy the brake pads and rotors for the year calipers you have after 06 they changed the design of the calipers

Disc diameter:
03-05 Mazda 6 => 11.1" => Fits no problem with a 16" wheel
06-07 Mazda 6 => 11.8" => Fits no problem with a 16" wheel
06-07 MazdaSpeed 6 => 12.6" => Must have a 17" wheel minimum

other vehicals that use the same brakes as the mazda 6
Here is a list of other vehicles that use the same brakes as the Mazda6:
2006-2008 Ford Fusion
2007-2008 Lincoln MKZ
2006-2006 Lincoln Zephyr
2006-2008 Mercury Milan

For rear brake calipers you can use 99 - 03 protege calipers rotors and pads it will still allow you use of the ebrake. the mazda 6 rear calipers will not allow use of the ebrake

heres a pic of how much bigger the brakes are on the msp6
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k1...4/DSCF5343.jpg

if anyone wants to check out the thread heres the url http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701255346 there a couple more set ups talked about on the thread i believe what you go with is up to you but i am gefinitally getting the mazda speed set up for my front

Well, what's known to fit with the 15" stock GT wheels?

i am running the 2nd gen wilwood big brakes on my 1st gen. but they barely clear the 2nd gen swirleys im running.

but there are a few different 1st genners that have already done the mazda6 brakes, check around PT and mx6.com.

These are my front brakes. They are 11.77" compared to the stock which was around 10.2". I decided to go all the way and get slotted/drilled rotors for the 6 but I am sure that stock rotors will still be a huge upgrade. I am waiting for a shim to be made that fits over the rear spindle to allow for a 2gen wheel bearing hub to fit on a 1g spindle. Then I will put the mazda6 brakes on the rear. One of the neat things about this upgrade is the brake bias on the 6 is not so heavy in the front. Its more neutral than the Probe's brakes and will not understeer as much if you brake very hard.

So if you want more predictable handling, these are great.

If you want virtually no brake fade, which I have experienced, then this is the way to go.

If you want shorter stopping distance all you need is wider rubber to match the bigger brakes.

BTW this has been documented 4 times that I know of.

...after i just wasted money getting those gay 2-piston subbie calipers and EBC Redstuff pads for my 91gt.....i need to read into this and get some bigger brakes....espcially with my 18" rims...i need bigger brakes to fill in the gap....im looking hard at those MS6 brakes now....and if tault can make that shim for the rears that would be awsome

After I get the shim/spacers I will test fit them then I can tell my machinist friend who is making them that people may want several more. Of course he will want to charge for it. Right now he is giving them to me free cuz i Just want two for myself and they are really simple. But I will ask him how much a set of two would be for you people as soon as he gives them to me.

im reluctant to do anything until there is an easy way to upgrade the rears as well....i dont want huge ass rotors on the front and nothing on the rear...not to mention the brake bias this doesnt help

how do you like your wilwoood setup on the front? cost and where did you get it?

after reading pages of threads yesterday i never really got a final conclusion for 1st gens other than we can bolt on the front big brake kits....but nothing conclusive for the rears

how did i mount them on my 1st gen? i bought them, and bolted them up. lol. 2nd gen front big brakes have been known to work on 1st gens for years. mazdameister put 2nd gen hydracyl big brakes on his 1st gen mx6 back in like 02 after all.

for the brake bias. switching calipers has nothing to do with that. thats where a brake proportioning valve comes in. which there are tons of aftermarket options out there. and very cheap ones also.

Tault if you get some shims made up and they work as planed I will buy a set, I hate how my front brakes lock up and my rears don't do a thing when I really need stop. The way I see it there's no point in upgrading the front brakes unless I can upgrade the rears.

I'd also like to see how they're mounted up and what exact clearance issue they are correcting whenever you get them.

not sure if you are talking to me or not...but i didnt ask how they mounted, i asked how you liked them

i know the fronts just bolt up, but the rears dont....did mazdameister put the 2nd gen hydracyl on the rears too? im guessing not, which is why Tault is looking at making spacers, either that or somehow mate some 2nd gen spindles/hubs to the rear of a 1st gen

i wish someone would just make one big conclusive post on that PT thread....one for 1st gens and one for 2nd gens
