Manual To Power Windows Conversion
Covers:
Replacing the manual windows with power windows is one of the most useful options you can add to your Probe. Whether it's a matter of convenience or laziness, anyone who gets use to power windows will never want to return to manual windows. Conversion to power windows is a bit involved, but still quite accomplishable.
Overview
When complete with the door's wiring, there should be an extra wire connector at the inside of each of the doors' jams. These connectors will need to be connected together by fabricating your own harness. Three wires will need to run from the driver's side connector, under the dash board, and to the passenger's side connector. When running the new wiring, be sure to carefully place the wires away from possible moving parts, such as the steering column and foot pedals. I highly recommend getting the parts from the same year Probe as the one you're installing everything into.
Parts Required
Tools Required:
10mm, 14mm wrench/socket
Phillip's Screwdriver
Wire Cutters/Strippers
Upholstery Removing Tool (Optional)
Hair Dryer (Optional)
Removal Of Old:
Remove the three Phillip's screws from the arm rest of the door and remove the arm rest.
Remove the Phillip's screws from the interior door handle and from the top front of the door trim, near the side mirror.
Remove the manual window handle from the door by removing the 'C' clip behind the handle, then slide it off the gear. See Image 1, below.
Get an upholstery remover tool or something with a flat end. Slide the tool behind the door trim until you meet a retaining clip. Twist the tool to pop the clip from the door. Repeat for all retaining clips. If no tool is available, simply pull the trim away from the door, but be extremely careful not to break any of the retaining clips.
When all the retaining clips have been removed, slide the door trim upwards, to unhook it from the top of the door. The interior door handle will still be in the way, so when the trim is completely free, slide it back along the door handle rod to give you better access to the door handle. Turn the handle to the side, remove the clip from the rod by snapping it off sideways, then push the rod down and out. Remove the door handle and door trim from the vehicle.
Peel the plastic covering off the door interior. If the adhesive is dried out and doesn't peel off, use a hair dryer to soften it up.
Put the window handle back on the gear and lower the window enough to see all four window glass mounting bolts (See 'A' arrows in Image 2, below). Remove the handle again.
Remove the four 10mm window nuts from the lower part of the side window glass (See 'A' arrows in Image 2, below). Be extremely careful when removing the last nut. Be sure to hold onto the glass or have someone else hold it in place. If you don't, the glass will drop when you remove the nuts. When all the nuts have been removed, push the bolts out and remove the glass from the door. Make sure you have the nut, bolt, large washer, and two plastic washers for each mounting set you have.
Remove the three 10mm nuts from around the window handle gear (See the red arrows in Image 3, below).
Initial Installation
Slide the power window regulator/motor into the door.
Line up the bolts on the regulator into the door holes and install the two bolts (See 'B' arrows in Image 2, below).
Line up the bolts on the window motor into the door holes and install the three bolts (See the red arrows in Image 3, below).
Slide the window into the door and line up the holes in the window to the holes in the mounting brackets. Install the four mounting bolts and nuts with the metal and plastic washers correctly lined up (See 'A' arrows in Image 2, below).
Wiring the Door
The new door harness will be different from the original door harness in that it will have two new connectors. One of these connectors is for the power window switch and the other is for the power window motor.
Examine the way the door wiring harness is connected to the door. The new harness will be installed the same way. Disconnect all connectors and detach the harness from the door.
Pull the cap off both ends of the wire boot between the front of the door and the door jam and disconnect the gray hole protectors on each end.
Pull the wire through from the door jam just enough to disconnect the connector.
Pull the door wiring harness through the front of the door.
Slide the new harness in through the front of the door and connect all mounting points and electrical connectors inside the door the same way the old harness was mounted.
Connect the extra two-wire connector in the door to the power window motor.
Connect the smaller connector from the door wiring harness at the front of the door to the connector at the door jam.
Push the second connector through the hole and pull though the other side. This is your power window connector (see additional wiring, below).
Reconnect the wire boot to the door and jam.
