Step 4: Working With The Factory Subwoofer Amplifier (If equipped)
Overview
Some Probe
Premium Sound systems included a subwoofer and 50-watt subwoofer amplifier. The
subwoofer amplifier is located behind the left side rear trim next to the rear
seat (opposite the stereo amplifier). If your Probe has the factory subwoofer,
you will need to either wire the subwoofer amplifier to make it compatible with
your new stereo unit or bypass the amplifier completely.
Option 1: Using The Amplifier
If you plan
on using the subwoofer with your new stereo unit, you will need to add a 12-volt
signal to let the subwoofer amplifier know when to turn on. Without this signal,
the amplifier will remain off and no audio will be sent to the subwoofer. If you
chose to use your main factory amplifier as well (Option 1 on Step 3), then no
additional wiring is needed. Otherwise, follow the following proceedure.
- Find
the red/green wire on the main radio connector.
- Connect
the red/green wire to the new stereo unit's amplifier trigger wire. If one
is not available, connect it to the blue/white wire (main power).
Option 2: Bypassing The Amplifier
- Remove
the trunk cover.
- Remove
the four screws and two push tabs from the rear trunk trim. Pry the trim away
from the body to disengage the retaining clips. Remove the rear trunk trim.
- Fold
down the left rear seat and remove the three push tabs from the front, two
push tabs from the rear, and two screws from the left side trunk trim.
- Remove
the safety belt trim and remove the hidden push tab.
- Pry
the trim away from the body to disengage the retaining clips. Disconnect the
trunk lamp and remove the right side trunk trim from the vehicle.
- Remove
the two push tabs from the quarter panel trim and pry the trim panel away
from the body to disengage the retaining clips. Remove the right quarter panel
trim.
- Disconnect
the electrical connectors from the amplifier and remove the three mounting
nuts. Remove the amplifier from the vehicle.
- Cut
the connector end off both the wiring harnesses and connect the wires as shown
below.

- When the connections are complete, turn the radio on to test the subwoofer.
- Reinstall
the trim.
