Step 4: Working With The Factory Subwoofer Amplifier (If equipped)

Overview
The premium sound system package with the CD player included a subwoofer and 50-watt subwoofer amplifier. If your Probe has the factory CD player, you will need to either wire the subwoofer amplifier to make it compatible with your new stereo unit or bypass the amplifier completely.

Option 1: Using The Amplifier
If you plan on using the subwoofer with your new stereo unit, you will need to add a 12-volt signal to let the subwoofer amplifier know when to turn on. Without this signal, the amplifier will remain off and no audio will be sent to the subwoofer. If you chose to use your main factory amplifier as well (Option 1 on Step 3), then no additional wiring is needed. Otherwise, follow the following proceedure.
  1. Find the white wire on the main radio connector. Be sure it's the main connector from the radio and not the speaker connector.
Main Radio Connector

  1. Connect the white wire to the new stereo unit's amplifier trigger wire. If one is not available, connect it to the blue/white wire (main power).
Option 2: Bypassing The Amplifier
  1. Open the liftgate and remove the cargo cover.
  2. Remove the ten push tabs from the rear trunk trim and remove the trim from the vehicle.
  1. Remove the two screws and one push tab from the upper trunk side trim. Detach the trim panel retaining clips by prying it away from the body. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  1. Remove the push tabs from the lower trunk side trim. Detach the two retaining clips at the front of the panel by prying it away from the body. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  2. Remove the three screws along with the fourth small screw at the base of the B-pillar from the quarter panel trim. Detach the trim panel retaining clips by prying the panel away from the body. Remove the panel from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the three 10mm mounting bolts from the subwoofer amplifier. Disconnect the wire connector and remove the subwoofer amplifier from the vehicle.
  1. Connect the subwoofer wiring as follows:
Wire Function Stereo
To Amplifier

Positive Blue/Yellow Red/Black
Negative Blue/Orange* Black/White
*Blue/White on 1989 Models
  1. When the connections are complete, turn the radio on to test the subwoofer.
  2. Reinstall the trim.
