Aftermarket Stereo Installation

Step 3: Working With The Factory Amplifier (If equipped)

Overview
The premium sound system package that was offered with the Probe included an amplifier that delivered 20-watts per channel. It is located under the front passenger seat. Normally, installation kits will include a wiring harness that is used to bypass the factory amplifier. This, however, is unnecessary unless you are worried about loss of sound quality.

Option 1: Using The Amplifier
If you'd prefer to use the factory amplifier with your new receiver, you'll need to do a little extra wiring. Ford's premium sound receivers use a 12-volt signal to let the amplifier know when to turn on. Without this signal, the amplifier will remain off and no audio will be sent to the speakers.

NOTE: This procedure will also supply the required 12v signal to the subwoofer amplifier, if available.
  1. Find the white wire on the main radio connector. Be sure it's the main connector from the radio and not the speaker connector.
Main Radio Connector

  1. Connect the white wire to the new stereo unit's amplifier trigger wire. If one is not available, connect it to the blue/white wire (main power).
  2. Return to Step 2 to complete the stereo installation.
Option 2: Bypassing The Amplifier
If you'd prefer to bypass the factory amplifier, you can buy a 6" bypass harness for it at most car audio shops. If you don't have one, you can manually bypass it.
  1. Push the front passenger side seat all the way forward. Remove the plastic screw tabs from the two covers at the rear of the front seat tracks and remove the covers.
  2. Remove the three 14mm bolts and one 14mm nut from the front passenger seat. Disconnect any wires from the bottom and remove the seat from the vehicle.
  1. Locate the premium sound amplifier. Disconnect the Stereo-to-Amplifier connector from the left side of the amplifier and the Amplifier-to-Speakers connector from the right side.
  1. Remove the three 10mm mounting bolts from the amplifier and remove the amplifier from the vehicle. It will no longer be needed.
  2. Cut the connectors end off both the wiring harnesses and connect the wires as shown below.

  1. When the connections are complete, make sure the wiring harness is secured so it won't catch on the bottom of the seat.
  2. Reinstall the passenger seat.
  3. If your Probe has the factory subwoofer, you will need to either rewire it or bypass it as well. Proceed to Step 4 for instructions.
