Aftermarket Stereo Installation

Covers:

Step 1: Removing The Factory Stereo Unit
  1. Remove shifter trim:
    1. Automatic Transaxle: Remove the trim piece around the shift lever by prying upwards.
    2. Manual Transaxle: Slide shift boot down and unscrew the shift knob. Remove the shift boot then remove the trim piece around the shifter by prying upwards.
  1. Remove ash tray. Remove the ash tray trim by prying up on the front of the trim piece to detach the clips.
  2. Remove the two mounting screws at the bottom of the stereo assembly that were behind the ash tray trim.
  3. Insert the the DIN removal tools into the holes on the edges of the stereo unit face. If you don't have the DIN removal tools, get two 8" pieces of coat hanger wire and bend them each into 'U's to use in place of the DIN removal tools. There should be two holes on each side in the face of the stereo unit. Place the tips of one tool into the two holes on the right side. Slowly slide the tool into the unit until a light click is heard or felt. Repeat for the left side. Push the outer ends of the tools outwards away from each other. This should release the metal springs holding the unit in place. Pull the unit out from the console. This should be relatively easy... if not, the clips are not being released properly. Do not force the unit out.
  1. Remove the unit and detach the antenna wire, and two connectors from the rear of the stereo unit.
  2. Proceed to Step 2 for instructions on installing your new stereo unit.
