Power Door Locks Conversion
Covers:
If your Probe does not have power door locks factory installed, you can easily add this feature to your car. Only five parts are required for proper installation (see Image #1, below). It's one of the simplest options you can add to your Probe while providing a slight increase to the car's value.
Overview
Normally the power door lock wiring is already factory installed, even in Probes without power locks. You should start by checking to see if the correct wiring harness is in fact installed. If it doesn't have the connectors, then you should be able to swap the harness with the one you need quite easily.
When installing the power door lock option, everything basically just needs to be plugged in. No additional wiring is necessary. When purchasing the parts from a junk yard or used parts dealer, make sure that both the door lock motors have the two mounting bolts and plastic connector on each of them (see image #2). This will aid the installation. Also, when purchasing the interior door handles with the power door lock buttons, be aware that the interior trim colors changed slightly between 1989 and 1990-92 Probes. For instance, the grey from a 1989 Probe is a few shades darker then the grey from a 1990-92 Probe.
Parts Required
Tools Required
10mm wrench/socket
Phillip's Screwdriver
Upholstery Removing Tool (Optional)
Motor Installation
Remove the three Phillip's screws from the arm rest of the driver's side door and remove the arm rest.
Remove the Phillip's screws from the interior door handle and from the top front of the door trim, near the side mirror.
Remove the manual window handle from the door by removing the 'C' retaining clip behind the handle, then slide it off the gear. See Image #3, below.
Get an upholstery remover tool or something with a flat end. Slide the tool behind the door trim until you meet a retaining clip. Twist the tool to pop the clip from the door. Repeat for all retaining clips. If no tool is available, simply pull the trim away from the door, but be extremely careful not to break any of the retaining clips.
When all the retaining clips have been removed, slide the door trim upwards, to unhook it from the top of the door. The interior door handle will still be in the way, so when the trim is completely free, slide it back along the door handle rod to give you better access to the door handle. Turn the handle to the side, remove the clip from the rod by snapping it off sideways, then push the rod down and out. Remove the door handle and door trim from the vehicle.
Peel the plastic covering off the door interior. If the adhesive is dried out and doesn't peel off, use a hair dryer to soften it up.
Remove the plastic connector from the end of the power door lock motor marked with an 'L'. Slide the plastic connector into the hole at the bottom of the door lock mechanism in the door shell (see Image #4).
Relay Installation
Disconnect the trunk cover lift cords and remove the cover from the vehicle.
Remove the two screws from the left side upper trunk trim. Pull away from frame to detatch retaining clips and disconnect the two wires from the trunk light (if equipped). Remove the upper trunk trim from vehicle.
