Ignition Timing and Adjustment

Timing

1. Start the engine and allow it to warm to normal operating temperature.
2. Turn off all electrical loads (stereo, lights, climate control, etc.).
3. Connect a timing light to the engine.
4. Connect a jumper wire between the black signal terminal STI connector and a ground.

5. Disconnect and plug up the vacuum hoses at the distributor.
6. Using the timing light, check the engine timing. Timing should be 6° ±1° before top dead center. If timing is not within specification, proceed to Adjustment below.

NOTE: When timing is complete, be sure to remove the jumper wire from the STI connector and reconnect vacuum hoses to the distributor.

Adjustment

1. Loosen the two distributor lock bolts just enough to rotate the distributor housing.
2. Slowly turn the distributor housing to make the adjustment.

3. Recheck the timing.
4. When the timing adjustment is complete, tighten the distributor lock bolts to 14-19 ft/lbs (19-25 N·m).
