Ignition Timing and Adjustment
Covers:
- 1993 2.0L 4-Cylinder Engine with Manual Transaxle
- 1994-1997 2.0L 4-Cylinder Engine
Timing
- Start the engine and allow it to warm to normal operating temperature.
- Turn off all electrical loads (stereo, lights, climate control, etc.).
- Connect a timing light to the engine.
- Find the double wire spark output (SPOUT) connector near the Data Link Connector. Remove shorting bar from the SPOUT connector.
- Using the timing light, check the engine timing. Timing should be 10° ±1° before top dead center. If timing is not within specification, proceed to Adjustment below.
NOTE: When timing is complete, be sure to replace the SPOUT shorting bar, if removed.
Adjustment
- Loosen the distributor lock bolt just enough to rotate the distributor housing.
- Slowly turn the distributor housing to make the adjustment.
- Recheck the timing.
- When the timing adjustment is complete, tighten the distributor lock bolt to 14-19 ft/lbs (19-25 N·m).
