Ignition Timing and Adjustment

Covers:

Timing
  1. Start the engine and allow it to warm to normal operating temperature.
  2. Turn off all electrical loads (stereo, lights, climate control, etc.).
  3. Connect a timing light to the engine.
  4. Connect a jumper wire to connect the STI terminal and the Ground terminal on the Data Link Connector.
  1. Using the timing light, check the engine timing. Timing should be 12° ±1° before top dead center. If timing is not within specification, proceed to Adjustment below.
NOTE: When timing is complete, be sure to remove the jumper wire from the Data Link Connector.

Adjustment
  1. Loosen the two distributor lock bolts just enough to rotate the distributor housing.
  2. Slowly turn the distributor housing to make the adjustment.
  3. Recheck the timing.
  4. When the timing adjustment is complete, tighten the distributor lock bolts to 14-19 ft/lbs (19-25 N·m).
