Ignition Timing and Adjustment

Timing
- Start the engine and allow it to warm to normal operating temperature.
- Turn off all electrical loads (stereo, lights, climate control, etc.).
- Connect a timing light to the engine.
- Connect a jumper wire to connect the STI terminal and the Ground terminal on the Data Link Connector.
- Using the timing light, check the engine timing. Timing should be 12° ±1° before top dead center. If timing is not within specification, proceed to Adjustment below.
NOTE: When timing is complete, be sure to remove the jumper wire from the Data Link Connector.
Adjustment
- Loosen the two distributor lock bolts just enough to rotate the distributor housing.
- Slowly turn the distributor housing to make the adjustment.
- Recheck the timing.
- When the timing adjustment is complete, tighten the distributor lock bolts to 14-19 ft/lbs (19-25 N·m).
