Radio Bulb Replacement

Covers:

The backlight in the radio will slowly dim over time due to blackening of the bulb. This can make the radio display gradually more difficult to see. Replacement is pretty easy, but a bulb will need to be acquired from a local Ford dealer.

Required:

Installation

  1. Automatic Transaxle: Remove the shift selector trim piece. Manual Transaxle: slide shift boot down and unscrew the shift knob. Then remove boot and selector trim piece.
  2. Remove ash tray. Remove the two mounting screws holding the ash tray trim in place. Remove ash tray trim.

  3. Remove the two mounting screws that were behind the ash tray trim and are holding the stereo assembly in place. Insert the the din removal tools into the holes on the edges of the cassette deck face. If you don't have the din removal tools, get two 6" pieces of coat hanger wire and bend them each into 'U's. There should be two holes on each side in the face of the cassette deck. Place the tips of one 'U' shaped piece of wire into the two holes on the right side. Repeat for the left side. This should release the metal springs holding the unit in place. This can be a little tricky.  Remove the unit and detach the antenna wire, and two plugs from the rear.

  4. Turn the volume button all the way to the left and turn the other four adjustment knobs to the middle position. Remove all five knobs by pulling them straight off. See Image #1.
  5. Remove the two torxs screws from either side of the unit. See Image #2.
  6. Carefully pull the face off. Take note that the face will not be able to come off completely due to the wire connections at the bottom of the face.
  7. Pull the bulb (see Image #3) straight out. Install a new bulb by pushing into place. DO NOT touch the new bulb with your bare fingers. This will cause it to burn out much quicker then normal.
  8. Replace the face and knobs, then reinstall into the vehicle.
