Alternator Removal/Installation

Covers:

The alternator in first generation Probe 4-cylinders (turbo and non-turbo) can be a pretty tricky part to remove. The non-turbo Probe's alternator may be removed easier then the following procedure, but under certain circumstances it may be required. Turbocharged Probe alternators will require the following procedure due to the added power steering lines from the Variable Power Assist feature.

Required:

Removal:

  1. With the parking brake on, raise and safely support the front of the car.

  2. Remove the right wheel.

  3. Remove the two 14mm nuts at the front of the catalytic converter and lower the assembly away from the chassis.

  4. Remove the top strut-to-steering knuckle 17mm bolt. See Image 1 below.

  5. Pull the hub assembly out and back to stretch the driveshaft/CV joint. See Image 2 below.

  6. With a hammer or pry bar, tap or pry the CV joint assembly off of the driveshaft. Move the CV joint assembly down and toward the engine to get it out of the way. See Image 3 below.

  7. Disconnect the single wire connector and the double wire connector from the alternator.

  8. With a 12mm wrench or socket, remove the lock nut above the alternator.

  9. Remove the 12mm adjustment bolt and block on the alternator and remove the alternator belt. If the alternator doesn't move, loosen the swivel/mounting bolt on the bottom of the alternator.

  10. From under the car, remove the swivel/mounting bolt on the bottom of the alternator and slide the alternator down and past the CV joint assembly.

Installation

  1. From under the car,  slide the alternator up past the CV joint assembly and onto the alternator mount.

  2. Replace the alternator swivel/mounting bolt.

  3. Replace the alternator adjustment bolt and block and loosely install the lock bolt.

  4. Install the alternator belt on the alternator and tighten the adjustment bolt until the belt is snug. Tighten the lock bolt.

  5. Connect the single wire connector and the double wire connector to the alternator.

  6. Slide the CV joint assembly onto the driveshaft and press together until the snap ring on the driveshaft snaps in place.

  7. Replace the top strut-to-steering knuckle 17mm bolt and tighten to 69-86 ft/lbs.

  8. Replace the right wheel and tighten the lug nuts to 65-87 ft/lbs.

  9. Lower the vehicle.
