Variable Assist Power Steering Test: 1989-92 Probe GTs [Print Page]
Overview All 1989-92 Probe GTs were equipped with the Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS) system. This computer-controlled power steering system has an internal diagnostic system. When a particular part of the system fails, the VAPS system will signal an error code. If there seems to be a problem with the steering system, you can perform a diagnostic test to check for the presence of error codes. The VAPS system does not store codes, nor does it provide any signal to the driver that a code is present.

This diagnostic test can only be performed on 1989-92 Probes with 2.2L 4-cylinder turbo engines.

Procedure Checking for codes can be performed with an analog voltmeter. Set the meter to read between 0 and 15 volts. To prepare for test, find the three wire VAPS test connector behind the driver's side strut tower. Connect the positive wire of the voltmeter to the Yellow/Black wire on the VAPS test connector, and the negative wire to the Black wire on the VAPS test connector. See below for how to interpret the pulses.

VAPS Test Connector

There are three test steps for checking for error codes. Repeat the test for each of the following conditions:
  1. Set steering wheel in straight ahead position with the engine idling
  2. Turn the steering wheel 45 degrees left and right from center with engine idling
  3. Jack up the vehicle and drive the front wheels at more then 6.2mph (10kmh)

Interpreting the Codes The pulses on the voltmeter translate into single digit codes. Every time the needle on the voltmeter sweeps across to 4.4 volts and drops back to zero, that is considered one pulse. Codes are displayed by the number of pulses the voltmeter displays. So five pulses would indicate an error code 3. If there is more then one error code, they are separated by a longer pause.
